About the Exhibition

Held under the Patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, and organised by the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award (HIPA), Dubai Photo Exhibition will launch in March 2016.

This international photography showcase fostered dialogue on photography from different countries around the world, transcending boundaries between form, technique, and geographic region. The exhibition explored a global perspective on photography, casting a light on the influences that define this art form, in one location, in a single moment. Through a global presentation of museum-quality 20th and 21st century photographic works, in an unprecedented photography platform of this scale, 18 curators brought together works from 23 countries, in a seamless visual experience that celebrated the harmony and diversity within global photography.

Dubai Photo Exhibition has been created by the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award (HIPA) to promote Dubai as a hub for local and international photography and to nurture photographic excellence through educational programs, events and workshops. Supported by the World Photography Organisation (WPO), Dubai Photo Exhibition provides a new cultural moment on the world's art calendar, while cultivating appreciation and fostering dialogue in the region.

Dubai Photo Exhibition took place from 16 – 19 March 2016 in Dubai, and was held in a 'temporary museum' purpose-built in the Dubai Design District (d3). The showcase combined the work of many of the most celebrated working photographers today, alongside the grand masters of the 20th century, cementing Dubai's vision of becoming a highly creative, connected and cultural city, in line with Dubai 2021 plan and Expo 2020.

Objectives

Dubai Photo Exhibition's aim is to establish Dubai as a key player in the photography world, by creating a space where photography professionals, collectors, institutions and artists as well as a larger audience of art and photography aficionados and appreciators can meet. By promoting Dubai as a hub for local and international photography, Dubai Photo Exhibition hopes to raise the profile of the medium within the UAE and GCC, to celebrate talented local and international photographers and to nurture photographic excellence through educational programs, events and workshops.

By fostering dialogue on photography from different countries around the world, Dubai Photo Exhibition brings photography, its history and finer points to the masses, experts and novices alike, and cultivates an appreciation and love of this art form in the region whilst shining a light on Dubai's commitment to supporting art, culture and innovation.
